Why the Five Daily Prayers Are the Foundation of Islam
The status of the five daily prayers and why they are the pillar of a Muslim's life.
Salah is the second pillar of Islam and the first act a person will be asked about. This article explains why the five daily prayers matter, with the Quran and authentic hadith, and offers realistic advice for staying consistent.
Quick answer
The five daily prayers are obligatory on every adult Muslim at fixed times. The Quran says prayer is "decreed upon the believers at specified times" (4:103). The Prophet ﷺ said Islam is built on five, one of which is establishing prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
Where it comes from
The five daily prayers were prescribed on the night of the Isra and Mi'raj. The Prophet ﷺ reported that the prayers were first fifty, then reduced until five remained, with the reward of fifty (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
What the Quran says
- "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times" (Quran 4:103).
- "Establish prayer, indeed prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing" (Quran 29:45).
- "Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer" (Quran 2:238).
What the hadith say
- A pillar of Islam. Islam is built upon five: the testimony of faith, establishing prayer, giving zakat, Hajj and fasting Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
- The first thing asked about. The Prophet ﷺ said the first of a person's deeds to be reckoned on the Day of Judgment is the prayer, and if it is sound, the rest will be sound (recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi and Sunan al-Nasa'i, and graded sahih by al-Albani).
- A river at the door. The Prophet ﷺ asked whether anything of a man's dirt would remain if he bathed five times a day in a river at his door, and said this is like the five prayers, with which Allah erases sins (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). Scholars understand this to refer to minor sins, with major sins requiring repentance.
The five prayers and their rhythm
Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha spread remembrance across the day. Check the exact timings for your city on our prayer times page, and see the salah guide for the method.
What if you have been missing prayers?
Scholars treat neglect of prayer very seriously, and they differ on the ruling for someone who abandons it altogether. We will not issue rulings here, but the practical way forward is clear:
- Start praying all five now, however you can.
- Make up missed prayers (qada) as your school describes. Many scholars advise making them up in order and gradually.
- Repent sincerely. Allah accepts repentance.
- Speak to a scholar about your particular case.
Staying consistent
- Link each prayer to a daily anchor, such as after the adhan on your phone.
- Keep a visible record with our salah tracker.
- Start with the fard, then add the sunnah. See sunnah prayers.
- Pray in congregation when possible. The Prophet ﷺ said congregational prayer is 27 degrees better than praying alone (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
