Understanding Fidyah in Islam
Fidyah (فدیة) is a compensatory payment Allah permits in place of fasting for those who genuinely cannot fast, with no reasonable expectation of ever being able to make the fasts up. The Quran states it directly: "And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] is a ransom [fidyah] — the feeding of a poor person [for each day missed]" (2:184). It is not a penalty — it is a mercy, an alternative Allah built into the obligation itself for people in genuinely difficult circumstances.
وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ
