Fidyah & Kaffarah Guide
Understanding fasting obligations
Fidyah is a built-in alternative to fasting, not a penalty — the Quran states it directly: "And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] is a ransom [fidyah]: the feeding of a poor person [for each day]" (2:184). It applies to those with a lasting excuse — chronic illness, old age with no expectation of recovery — and, with genuine scholarly difference on the specifics, pregnant and breastfeeding women. One missed fast equals feeding one needy person.

“And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] — a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:184
