Understanding Zakat obligations in Islam
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory act of worship, not optional charity. Allah commands it directly in the Quran: "And establish prayer and give Zakat" (2:43), a pairing repeated over two dozen times in the Quran alongside Salah. Every adult Muslim whose qualifying wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year must give 2.5% of that wealth to those entitled to receive it (Quran 9:60). It is not a tax on income — it is an annual levy on wealth that has sat with you for a year, meant to circulate money from those who have surplus to those in need and to purify what remains.
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ
“And establish prayer and give Zakat.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43
