Why Read Surah Al-Kahf Every Friday

The light between two Fridays and protection from Dajjal — the virtues of Surah Al-Kahf.

Reading Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays is one of the most widely kept habits among Muslims. This article explains the two reports behind it, how each is graded, what the surah's four stories teach, and how to make the habit meaningful.

Quick answer

Two virtues are reported for Surah Al-Kahf. Memorising its first ten verses as protection from the Dajjal is in Sahih Muslim. The Friday "light" report is recorded by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi and authenticated by later scholars such as al-Albani, but it is not in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim. Both are widely accepted. The exact timing (Thursday evening to Friday, or Friday only) is discussed by scholars, and reading it at any time on Friday is the commonly stated practice.

The Friday report

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on the day of Jumu'ah will have a light between him and the Ancient House, in some versions "a light between the two Fridays." It is recorded by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi. Al-Hakim graded a version sahih, and al-Albani and other scholars authenticated it. Because it is outside the two Sahih collections, we describe it as a lower tier than the Dajjal hadith below, while noting that it is confidently cited.

The Dajjal report

Abu al-Darda' reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal. It is in Sahih Muslim. Other wordings in different books mention the last ten verses, which scholars have discussed. Authentic memorisation of the opening verses is the clearest, since it is in Muslim.

The sakinah

Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib reported that a man was reciting Surah Al-Kahf at home, and his horse began to shy. When he looked, a cloud had covered him. He told the Prophet ﷺ, who said it was the sakinah (tranquillity) that descends for the recitation of the Quran. This is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and the narration identifies the surah as Al-Kahf.

What the surah teaches

Surah Al-Kahf (18) has 110 verses. Its four accounts each answer a kind of trial:

  1. The People of the Cave: the trial of faith. Young men hold to their belief under pressure and are protected by Allah.
  2. The owner of two gardens: the trial of wealth. His arrogance toward his companion ends in loss, and the lesson is to say "Ma sha' Allah, la quwwata illa billah."
  3. Musa and al-Khidr: the trial of knowledge. Human knowledge is limited, and patience with what we do not understand is required.
  4. Dhul-Qarnayn: the trial of power. Authority is used with justice, and success is attributed to Allah's mercy.

The theme of trials is why the surah is connected with the Dajjal, whose fitnah is also about faith, wealth, knowledge and power. This is a reflection by scholars, not a separate hadith.

A practical Friday habit

  1. Read it with meaning, not only for the count. Our Surah Al-Kahf page has Urdu and English translation alongside the Arabic.
  2. Split it if you are short on time. Many people read a part after Fajr and finish after Asr.
  3. Add the other Friday sunnahs, covered in our Friday guide: ghusl, early arrival and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
  4. Memorise the first ten verses over a few weeks if you can, citing the authentic Muslim report.
