Understanding Fitrana in Islam
Sadaqah al-Fitr (also Fitrana) is a fixed, obligatory charity tied specifically to completing Ramadan — the name literally means "charity of breaking the fast." Ibn Umar narrated that the Prophet ﷺ made it obligatory on every Muslim, young or old, free or enslaved, male or female (Sahih al-Bukhari). Unlike Zakat, it's not a percentage of wealth — it's a fixed per-person amount, which is what makes it payable even by someone with very modest means, as long as they have food surplus to their immediate needs.
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا
“Take, [O Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.”
— Surah At-Tawbah 9:103
