Why read it
Recited by the Prophet ﷺ in the Friday prayer alongside Al-Munafiqun (Sahih Muslim).
Key point
62:9 — "O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade."
Historical Context
A Medinan surah that gives the day of Jumu'ah (Friday) its name and its central ruling: the congregational prayer and sermon. It begins by describing the Prophet ﷺ's mission, turns to those who were given scripture earlier but failed to act on it, and then addresses the Muslim community directly about Friday.
Main Themes
The Prophet ﷺ's threefold mission
Verse 2 describes him as sent to recite Allah's verses, purify the people, and teach them the Book and wisdom — a concise summary of what the surah and the wider Quran say a messenger is for.
Knowledge without action
Verse 5 compares those who were entrusted with the Torah but did not carry out its teachings to "a donkey carrying volumes [of books]" — a warning that holding scripture is not the same as living by it.
The Friday command
Verses 9-10 instruct believers to hasten to the remembrance of Allah when the call to prayer is made on Friday and set trade aside — then, once the prayer is finished, to disperse in the land and seek Allah's bounty.
Important Verses
62:5
The donkey carrying books
"The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of the donkey who carries volumes [of books]" — a pointed image applied by commentators more broadly to knowledge held without practice.
62:9-10
Friday prayer and returning to work
The ruling to hasten to the prayer and leave trade, followed immediately by permission to return to business and seek Allah's bounty — while still remembering Allah much.
62:11
A rebuke from a specific incident
Describes people dispersing toward trade or a diversion and leaving the Prophet ﷺ standing — the verse reminds that what is with Allah is better than diversion or trade.

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The occasion of 62:11
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) reported that while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon, a trade caravan arrived and people rushed out to it until only twelve men remained, whereupon this verse was revealed.

Recited in the Friday prayer
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Al-Jumu'ah in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the second rak'ah of the Friday prayer.
