12

Historical Context

A Meccan surah that opens by affirming, against the Quraysh's accusations, that the Quran is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds and not something the Prophet ﷺ invented (32:2-3). It then argues from creation and from the human body's own origin toward the certainty of resurrection, and closes with a pointed contrast between believers and the persistently disobedient.

Main Themes

The Quran's divine origin

The opening verses state directly that the book is "without doubt" from the Lord of the worlds, answering the claim that it was fabricated, and note that no warner had come to this people before — framing their need for it.

Creation as an argument for resurrection

The heavens and earth in six days, humankind begun from clay, then continued from a despised fluid (32:4-9) — presented as evidence that the One who originated life can restore it, answering the objection that once people are lost within the earth they could not be recreated (32:10).

Two kinds of people

Verses 15-22 contrast believers — who fall in prostration when reminded, rise from their beds at night to call on their Lord, and spend — with those who defied Allah, asking whether the two could ever be equal.

Important Verses

32:15

A verse of prostration

Describes believers who "fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise" when reminded of His verses and do not act arrogantly — this is one of the Quran's recognized sajdah (prostration of recitation) verses.

32:16-17

Night worship and its hidden reward

"They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration" — and "no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes" as reward. Commentators widely connect 32:16 to voluntary night prayer.

32:18

Not equal

"Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal" — the surah's direct rhetorical answer to the idea that conduct carries no consequence.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

Recited in the Friday Fajr prayer

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that on Friday in the Fajr prayer the Prophet ﷺ would recite "Alif-Lam-Meem, Tanzil" (As-Sajdah) and "Hal ata 'alal-insan" (Al-Insan).

Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim.

Before sleep, with Al-Mulk

A narration reports that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited As-Sajdah and Al-Mulk.

Jami at-Tirmidhi — graded hasan gharib, as noted on the Al-Mulk page; described here as a reported practice, not an obligation.
