Historical Context

A short Meccan surah whose name means "rivalry in worldly increase" — competing with one another over wealth, children, status, and numbers. It warns that this rivalry occupies people until death, and that they will certainly come to know the reality of what they were diverted from.

Main Themes

Rivalry that consumes a lifetime

The opening verses state that competition in worldly increase diverts people "until you visit the graveyards" — i.e., until death ends it, never having stopped to ask what it was for.

Knowledge that arrives too late

Verses 3-7 repeat "No! You are going to know" and then speak of the "knowledge of certainty" and the "eye of certainty" — described by commentators as stages of understanding, from hearing about the Hereafter to seeing it.

Asked about blessings

The closing verse states that on that Day, people will surely be asked about "the pleasure" (an-na'im) — every blessing they enjoyed.

Important Verses

102:1-2

102:5-7

"Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure."

How much of your wealth is yours

Abdullah ibn ash-Shikhkhir (RA) reported coming to the Prophet ﷺ as he was reciting "Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you," and the Prophet ﷺ said: "The son of Adam says, 'My wealth, my wealth.' Do you have anything from your wealth, O son of Adam, except what you ate and finished, wore and wore out, or gave in charity and sent ahead?"

Sahih Muslim.
