Powerful Duas for Rizq (Sustenance) from the Quran
Quranic and Prophetic supplications for seeking lawful provision and contentment.
Everyone asks Allah for provision (rizq). This guide lists the supplications for rizq that are reported in authentic and acceptable sources, the Quranic guidance on provision, and the conditions that make dua more likely to be accepted.
Quick answer
The best-attested duas for provision are for beneficial knowledge, good (halal) provision and accepted deeds, for being sufficed with what is lawful instead of what is forbidden, and for relief from debt. Dua should be accompanied by effort, honesty and gratitude.
What the Quran says
- "There is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision" (Quran 11:6).
- "And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect" (Quran 65:2-3).
- "I said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord, indeed He is ever a Forgiver. He will send down the sky upon you in abundance and give you increase in wealth and children'" (Quran 71:10-12), where Nuh (peace be upon him) links istighfar with provision.
Duas for rizq
Beneficial knowledge, good provision and accepted deeds
"Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan tayyiban wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan." The Prophet ﷺ taught it after Fajr (Sunan Ibn Majah). See dua 96.
Sufficed by the lawful
"Allahummak-fini bi halalika 'an haramika wa aghnini bi fadlika 'amman siwak" ("O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your bounty so that I do not need anyone else"). It is recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, which graded it hasan, as words that 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet ﷺ and taught to a man struggling to pay a debt. See dua 98.
Protection from poverty and humiliation
"Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-faqri wal-qillati wadh-dhillah" (Sunan Abi Dawud). See dua 66.
Seeking protection from debt
The Prophet ﷺ frequently sought refuge from debt and sin (Sahih al-Bukhari). See dua 71.
The conditions of accepted dua
- Halal earnings and food. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned a man who travels far, with dishevelled hair and raised hands, saying "O Lord, O Lord," while his food, drink and clothing are unlawful, and asked how his dua could be answered (Sahih Muslim).
- Sincerity and presence of heart. "Know that Allah does not accept a supplication from a heedless heart" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, graded hasan by al-Albani).
- Not hurrying. The dua of one of you is answered as long as he does not hasten, saying "I called but was not answered" (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
- Starting with praise and salawat. The Prophet ﷺ taught a man to begin with praise of Allah and blessings on the Prophet ﷺ before asking (Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' at-Tirmidhi).
- Not asking for sin or the cutting of family ties (Sahih Muslim).
Practical steps beyond dua
- Work and learn skills. Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) includes tying the camel, in the Prophet's ﷺ words (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, graded hasan by al-Albani).
- Maintain family ties, which is reported to expand provision (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
- Give charity. Charity does not decrease wealth (Sahih Muslim).
- Seek forgiveness often, following the example of Nuh (Quran 71).
- Pay [zakat](/zakat-calculator) and avoid interest.
How Allah answers dua
The Prophet ﷺ said that no Muslim makes a dua that does not include sin or severing family ties except that Allah gives him one of three things: He answers it, stores it for him in the Hereafter, or turns away an equivalent harm. The Companions said, "Then we will make more dua," and he said Allah is more generous (Musnad Ahmad, graded hasan by al-Albani).
