Morning Duas from Quran and Sunnah - Start Your Day Right

Authentic morning supplications and adhkar to begin the day with protection and blessing.

Morning adhkar (remembrance) set the tone for the day. This guide lists the morning supplications that are reported from the Prophet ﷺ, with their meaning, where each is recorded, and links to the Arabic text on our dua pages.

Quick answer

The morning adhkar are said between Fajr and sunrise, or at some point in the morning, and many scholars allow them until Dhuhr. The core set is: Ayatul Kursi and the three Quls, the supplication "Asbahna wa asbahal mulku lillah," Sayyid al-Istighfar, "Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un," and "Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi."

What the Quran says

"And glorify Him morning and evening" (Quran 33:42). "Remember your Lord much and exalt [Him] with praise in the evening and the morning" (Quran 3:41). These verses are the foundation of daily morning and evening remembrance.

The morning adhkar

1. Ayatul Kursi

Read it once. See Ayatul Kursi with translation for the text, tafsir and hadith with grading.

2. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, three times each

The Prophet ﷺ said that reciting these three times in the morning and evening suffices you against everything (Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' at-Tirmidhi, graded hasan). Read them: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas.

3. "Asbahna wa asbahal mulku lillah"

"We have reached the morning and the dominion belongs to Allah, and all praise is for Allah." Reported in Sahih Muslim (the evening wording, with the morning version following the same pattern) and Sunan Abi Dawud. See dua 1.

4. "Allahumma bika asbahna"

"O Allah, by You we have reached the morning, and by You we reach the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection." Recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi. See dua 2.

5. Sayyid al-Istighfar

The "master of seeking forgiveness." The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says it during the day with firm faith in it and dies that day before evening will be among the people of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari). See dua 12.

6. "Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un"

"In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing." Said three times, it is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' at-Tirmidhi, which graded it hasan. See dua 14.

7. "Allahumma 'afini fi badani"

A request for well-being of body, hearing and sight, said three times, recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud and al-Adab al-Mufrad. Scholars have commented on the strength of this report, so check a graded edition if you want to be certain. See dua 3.

8. "Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi"

"Glory be to Allah and praise to Him." The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says it a hundred times in a day will have his sins forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). See dua 6.

9. A dua for beneficial knowledge

"Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan tayyiban wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan," recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah. See dua 7.

Making it a habit

  • Choose a fixed moment, such as after Fajr, and stay seated after the prayer if you can.
  • Start with three. Ayatul Kursi, the three Quls and Sayyid al-Istighfar take a few minutes.
  • Understand them. Reciting with meaning is what makes the habit stay.
  • Use a counter for the 100 repetitions, such as our digital tasbeeh.
  • If you miss the morning, you can still say them later in the day. Do not abandon the habit because of one missed morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do the morning adhkar start and end?

They start after Fajr and are said until sunrise, or through the morning. Many scholars allow them until Dhuhr.

Do I have to recite them in Arabic?

Reciting the Arabic is the Sunnah, and learning the meaning helps. If you cannot yet read Arabic, listen and repeat while using the transliteration, and make additional dua in your own language.

Are the morning adhkar obligatory?

No. They are recommended acts of worship. Missing them is not a sin, though it is a loss of reward.

Which morning dua is best if I only have a minute?

Say "Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi" a hundred times if you can, or Sayyid al-Istighfar once with understanding.

Is there a difference between morning and evening adhkar?

They are almost the same, with the wording changing from "asbahna" (we reached the morning) to "amsayna" (we reached the evening).
