Riba (Interest) Guide

Understanding why interest is prohibited in Islam

The Quran describes it in unusually severe terms: "Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity" (2:275), and the Prophet ﷺ listed consuming Riba among "the seven destructive sins" that doom a person (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim) — in the same category as major sins like murder. The underlying reasoning scholars commonly cite: Riba guarantees the lender a return regardless of outcome while the borrower bears all the risk, concentrating wealth without shared risk or productive effort — the opposite of Islamic finance's preferred model of profit-and-loss sharing.

وَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا

“Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest.”

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:275
