Understanding inheritance in Islam
The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is not permissible for a Muslim who has something to will to spend two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready" (Sahih al-Bukhari) — a notably strong statement for something many people put off indefinitely. The practical reason this matters: Islamic inheritance (Faraid) applies automatically whether or not you write anything down, but a written will documents your debts, your Wasiyyah (voluntary bequest, see below), and your wishes clearly — without it, families are frequently left disputing what the deceased actually owed, owned, or intended, often for years.
يُوصِيكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي أَوْلَادِكُمْ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ الْأُنثَيَيْنِ
“Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females.”
— Surah An-Nisa 4:11
