Understanding Mahr in Islam
Mahr is a mandatory gift from the groom to the bride, agreed upon as part of the marriage (Nikah) contract — a common mistranslation calls it "dowry," but that term properly describes the reverse flow (wealth from the bride's family to the groom's), a separate, culturally-driven South Asian practice (jahez) that Islam does not require and many scholars actively discourage where it becomes a financial burden on the bride's family. Mahr moves the opposite direction and becomes the wife's exclusive personal property — not her family's, and not jointly owned with her husband. It can be cash, gold, property, or any agreed-upon item of value, including non-material things like teaching her something of value, in specific scholarly views.
وَآتُوا النِّسَاءَ صَدُقَاتِهِنَّ نِحْلَةً
“And give women their dowries as a free gift.”
— Surah An-Nisa 4:4
