Understanding Mahr in Islam
Mahr is the mandatory gift a groom gives his bride as part of the Nikah contract, becoming her exclusive personal property — not a family asset, not joint marital property. The Quran states: "And give the women [upon marriage] their [bridal] gifts graciously" (4:4). It can be cash, gold, property, or any item of agreed value. Note: this is often loosely translated "dowry," which is misleading — see the dowry comparison below for why that word actually points the wrong direction.
وَآتُوا النِّسَاءَ صَدُقَاتِهِنَّ نِحْلَةً
