Understanding Islamic inheritance rules
Islamic inheritance (Mirath, governed by the rules called Faraid) is a fixed distribution system set directly in the Quran rather than left to personal preference or a will — unlike many legal systems where you can direct your entire estate as you choose, Islamic law reserves at most one-third for your own discretion (Wasiyyah) and fixes the rest by formula. The stated rationale in classical scholarship is protecting vulnerable relatives — spouses, young children, parents — from being disinherited by a will written in anger, favoritism, or under pressure.
يُوصِيكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي أَوْلَادِكُمْ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ الْأُنثَيَيْنِ
“Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females.”
— Surah An-Nisa 4:11
