Meaning
The Calamity
Why read it
A short, vivid reminder of accountability, frequently recited in the final portion of the Quran.
Key point
101:6-7 — "Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], he will be in a pleasant life."
Historical Context
A short Meccan surah about "the Striking Calamity" (al-Qari'ah) — a name for the Day of Judgment, so called because it strikes the hearts with terror. Its brevity and rhythm are characteristic of the final section of the Quran, built to be recited and remembered.
Main Themes
A day that shakes everything
The surah asks three times — what is the Striking Calamity, what will make you know what it is — to underline how overwhelming it is, then describes people as scattered moths and mountains as carded wool (101:4-5).
The scales
Those whose scales are heavy with good deeds will be in a pleasant life; those whose scales are light will have "Hawiyah" as their abode (101:6-9).
A closing description
The surah ends by asking what will make you know what Hawiyah is, and answers: "a Fire, intensely hot" (101:10-11).
Important Verses
101:4-5
Moths and wool
People are described as being like dispersed moths, and the mountains like carded (fluffed) wool — two images of complete disorder and the dissolution of what seems most solid.
101:6-7
Heavy scales
"Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], he will be in a pleasant life."
101:8-9
Light scales
"But as for one whose scales are light, his refuge will be an abyss" (the Arabic word is Hawiyah) — commentators differ on the exact imagery, but agree it describes the Fire.
