Historical Context

A Meccan surah that opens with the disjointed letters Ha Mim and an oath by the clear Book. It describes the sending down of the Quran in a blessed night, warns the Makkans about a day when the sky brings visible smoke, tells the story of Pharaoh and the Children of Israel, and closes with the tree of Zaqqum and the Paradise of the God-fearing.

Main Themes

A blessed night

Verses 1-6 say that the Quran was sent down during a blessed night, when every matter of wisdom is made distinct. Most commentators, including Ibn Abbas, identify it as the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr).

The smoke

Verses 10-16 tell the Prophet ﷺ to watch for the day when the sky brings forth visible smoke covering the people, and describe the disbelievers asking for relief.

Pharaoh and Israel

Verses 17-33 recount how Pharaoh's people were tested with a noble messenger, how Allah delivered the Children of Israel, and how Pharaoh's court left behind gardens and springs that they would never get back.

A sky and earth that did not weep

Verse 29 says neither the heaven nor the earth wept for them and they were not given respite, a statement of how little the world mourned them.

Zaqqum and the gardens

Verses 43-57 describe the tree of Zaqqum as food for the sinful, like murky oil boiling in the belly, and the secure place of the God-fearing, in gardens and springs, dressed in silk, with no death there but the first.

Important Verses

44:3

A blessed night

Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].

44:29

Neither heaven nor earth wept

And not for them did the heaven and the earth weep, nor were they reprieved.

44:56

No death but the first

They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

The smoke and the famine of Makkah

Ibn Mas'ud (RA) said that when the Quraysh turned away, the Prophet ﷺ prayed against them for years like those of Yusuf. They were struck by famine until they ate bones, and one of them would see something like smoke between the sky and earth because of hunger. Ibn Mas'ud understood the smoke of this surah in that sense.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Scholars note that other Companions and later scholars understood the smoke as one of the major signs of the Last Hour, which is mentioned in a hadith in Sahih Muslim, and that the two views are discussed in tafsir.

Reading it on Friday night

Two narrations in Jami' at-Tirmidhi say that whoever recites Ha-Mim Ad-Dukhan on Friday night is forgiven, and that seventy thousand angels seek forgiveness for him.

Both reports are graded weak (da'if), with al-Tirmidhi himself criticising the chain. We do not present these as established virtues.
