Historical Context

A Medinan surah that begins by saying everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Allah, then rebukes believers for saying what they do not do. It recalls Musa and Isa as messengers who were rejected by their people, includes the announcement of a messenger named Ahmad, and ends with an invitation to a trade that saves from punishment: belief and striving.

Main Themes

Say and do

Verses 2-3 ask believers why they say what they do not do, and say that it is greatly hateful to Allah that they say what they do not do.

Steadfast ranks

Verse 4 says Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they were a firm structure, a picture of unity and discipline.

Musa and Isa

Verses 5-6 recall that Musa was hurt by his people, and that Isa told the Children of Israel he was a messenger confirming the Torah and giving good news of a messenger to come after him whose name is Ahmad.

A trade that saves

Verses 10-12 invite believers to a trade that will save them from a painful punishment: believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive with wealth and lives.

Helpers of Allah

Verse 14 calls believers to be helpers of Allah, as the disciples of Isa were, and notes that one group believed while another disbelieved.

Important Verses

61:2-3

Why do you say what you do not do?

O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.

61:6

The messenger named Ahmad

Isa announces a messenger to come after him whose name is Ahmad. Muslims understand this as referring to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, since Ahmad is one of his names.

61:10-11

A trade that will save you

The verses ask whether believers should be guided to a trade that saves from a painful punishment, and answer that it is to believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in His way.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

A reported occasion of revelation (tafsir)

A report from Abdullah ibn Salam (RA) says that some of the Companions were discussing which deed was most beloved to Allah and wished they knew, and that this surah was revealed, after which the Prophet ﷺ recited it to them.

Recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmad. We label it as a reported occasion of revelation in the tafsir tradition, with differing views among scholars on its grading, and not as an established hadith.
