Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

A reported occasion for verse 14 (tafsir)

Ibn Abbas (RA) is reported to have said that the verse was about people who accepted Islam in Makkah and wanted to migrate to Madinah but were held back by their spouses and children. When they later joined the Prophet ﷺ and saw others who had gained religious understanding, they wanted to punish their families, and the verse advised pardon.

Recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, which graded it hasan sahih. It is a tafsir report about the occasion of revelation, not a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.
