Historical Context

A Meccan surah that opens by asking what the Inevitable Reality is, and uses the fate of earlier peoples as evidence for it. It describes the blowing of the horn, the splitting of the sky and the holding of people to account, with the record taken in the right hand or the left. It ends by defending the Quran as the speech of a noble messenger, and not of a poet or a soothsayer.

Main Themes

The Inevitable Reality

Verses 1-3 introduce the Day of Judgment with a question that is asked three times, to emphasise its magnitude.

Nations that denied

Verses 4-12 recount the destruction of Thamud by a mighty blast, 'Ad by a furious wind that lasted seven nights and eight days, Pharaoh and the overturned cities, and the flood in the time of Nuh.

The day of the horn

Verses 13-18 describe a single blast, the earth and mountains being crushed, the sky splitting, and eight angels carrying the Throne.

The two records

Verses 19-37 say the one given his record in his right hand will happily say, "Here, read my record," while the one given it in his left will wish he had not been given it.

The Quran's source

Verses 38-52 say the Quran is the speech of a noble messenger, not of a poet or a soothsayer, and that had he invented sayings about Allah, Allah would have seized him.

69:40-43

The speech of a noble messenger

It is the speech of a noble messenger, and it is not the word of a poet, or the word of a soothsayer, but a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

A reported story about Umar's conversion (sira tradition)

A narration in Musnad Ahmad reports that Umar (RA), before accepting Islam, heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting this surah in prayer, was struck by its composition and thought he must be a poet, after which he heard the verses saying that it is not the word of a poet, and then a soothsayer, and felt Islam enter his heart.

A sira narration. Scholars have commented on its chain and grade it differently, and there are other accounts of how Umar accepted Islam, so we present it as a reported tradition and not as an established hadith.
