Historical Context

A Meccan surah that opens with oaths by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-reproaching soul. It answers the claim that Allah cannot reassemble the bones by saying that He is able to put together even the fingertips. It describes the Day, the soul at death, and ends by asking whether the One who created a human from a drop is not able to bring the dead to life.

Main Themes

Two oaths

Verses 1-2 swear by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-reproaching soul (nafs lawwamah), which commentators understand as the conscience that blames one for wrongdoing.

Reassembling the bones

Verses 3-4 ask whether man thinks that Allah will not assemble his bones, and say that He is able to fashion even his fingertips.

The soul and the Day

Verses 7-15 describe the sight dazzled, the moon eclipsed, the sun and moon joined, and man being told what he sent ahead and left behind, being a witness against himself.

Collecting the Quran

Verses 16-19 tell the Prophet ﷺ not to move his tongue to hasten the revelation, for its collection and recitation are upon Allah, and then its explanation.

Faces and the soul at death

Verses 22-30 describe radiant faces looking toward their Lord, gloomy faces, and the soul reaching the collarbone.

The final argument

Verses 36-40 ask whether man thinks he will be left neglected, remind him of the drop from which he was formed, and close by asking whether that One is not able to give life to the dead.

Important Verses

75:2

The self-reproaching soul

75:22-23

Looking at their Lord

[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord.

Seeing the Lord

Jarir ibn Abdullah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ looked at the full moon and said, "You will see your Lord as you see this moon, with no difficulty in seeing Him."
