Historical Context
A Meccan surah, among the earliest revealed. After the first revelation and a period when revelation paused, the Prophet ﷺ was commanded in this surah to rise and warn. The rest of the surah describes a person who rejected the Quran as magic, the nineteen guardians of the Fire, and a dialogue between the companions of the right and the people of Saqar.
Main Themes
The first commands
Verses 1-7 tell the Prophet ﷺ to arise and warn, to magnify his Lord, purify his clothing, avoid uncleanliness, not to give in order to receive more, and to be patient for his Lord.
The man who calculated
Verses 11-26 describe a person who thought and planned, frowned and scowled, then declared the Quran to be nothing but magic handed down, and say that he will be cast into Saqar.
Nineteen guardians
Verses 30-31 say that over the Fire are nineteen, and that this number was made a trial for the disbelievers, a source of certainty for those given the Scripture, and an increase of faith for the believers.
What put you in Saqar?
Verses 38-47 say that every soul is held for what it earned, except the companions of the right, who ask the sinners what led them to Saqar. They answer that they were not of those who prayed, did not feed the poor, indulged with those who indulged, and denied the Day of Judgment.
A reminder
Verses 54-56 say that the Quran is a reminder, so whoever wills may remember it, and that Allah is worthy of fear and worthy to forgive.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The pause in revelation and the call "O you who covers himself"
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ described the pause in revelation, saying that while walking he heard a voice from the sky and saw the angel who had come to him at Hira sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. He was frightened, returned home and asked to be covered, and Allah revealed "O you who covers himself..."
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Scholars reconcile this with Aisha's report that Iqra' was the first revelation by understanding that Al-Muddaththir was the first revelation after the pause.
A reported occasion about Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah (tafsir)
Many commentators say that verses 11-26 refer to Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, a Makkan leader who thought over the Quran and then called it magic.
A tafsir tradition, with chains of varying strength. We label it as the view of commentators, not as an authenticated hadith.
