Historical Context
A surah that this site's dataset lists as Medinan, though many scholars consider it Meccan, and the classification is discussed in the tafsir literature. It begins with the human being's creation as a test, describes the fate of the ungrateful and of the righteous, praises those who feed the needy for Allah's sake alone, and ends with encouragement to patience and remembrance.
Main Themes
Created to be tested
Verses 1-3 recall a time when man was nothing, then created from a mixed sperm-drop to test him, with hearing and sight, and guided to the way, whether grateful or ungrateful.
Those who feed the needy
Verses 7-10 describe the righteous as those who fulfil vows, fear a Day of distress, and give food to the needy, the orphan and the captive for the sake of Allah alone.
A description of Paradise
Verses 11-22 describe their reward: protection from the evil of that Day, gardens and silk, reclining without sun or bitter cold, shade and fruits within reach, cups mixed with ginger from a spring named Salsabil, and servants like scattered pearls.
Patience
Verses 23-26 tell the Prophet ﷺ that the Quran has been sent down in stages, to be patient with the decision of his Lord, and to remember the name of his Lord morning and evening and to prostrate to Him at night.

Morning, evening and night
And remember the name of your Lord morning and evening, and during the night prostrate to Him and exalt Him a long [part of the] night.
Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
Recited in Friday Fajr
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that on Friday in the Fajr prayer the Prophet ﷺ used to recite "Alif-Lam-Meem, Tanzil" (As-Sajdah) and "Hal ata 'alal-insan" (Al-Insan).
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
A popular story about Ali and Fatimah (tafsir)
Some tafsir works relate that verses 5-22 were revealed about Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husayn (RA) giving their food to a poor man, an orphan and a captive over three days.
Hadith scholars have criticised the chains of this story as weak, and some regard it as fabricated, so we do not present it as an established occasion of revelation. The surah's praise applies to any believer who feeds the needy sincerely for Allah.
