Historical Context

A Meccan surah that opens by asking what the people are disputing about, then answers: the great news. In Makkah the idea of resurrection was among the most mocked parts of the message. The surah responds not with argument alone but with a tour of the world, from the earth as a resting place to the rain that brings grain, as evidence that the One who made this can remake it.

Main Themes

The signs that answer the doubt

Verses 6-16 list the earth as a bed, the mountains as stakes, humans created in pairs, sleep as rest, night as a covering, day for livelihood, seven strong heavens, a shining lamp (the sun) and rain that brings forth grain, plants and gardens.

The Day of Decision

Verses 17-20 describe the appointed Day of Decision (Yawm al-Fasl), the blowing of the horn and the mountains turning to mirage.

Two ends

Hell is described as a place of ambush for the transgressors (78:21-30), and Paradise as a place of success for the God-fearing with gardens, vineyards and a full cup (78:31-36).

The day of silence

Verses 37-38 say that on that Day the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows and none will speak except those whom the Most Merciful permits.

Important Verses

78:6-16

The world as evidence

A sequence of signs that begin underfoot and end with rain and gardens, each given as a reason to expect the Resurrection.

78:38

No one speaks without permission

The Spirit and the angels stand in rows, and no one speaks except whoever the Most Merciful permits and who says what is correct.

78:40

The closing warning

The disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

Surahs that turned the Prophet's ﷺ hair grey

Abu Bakr (RA) is reported to have asked the Prophet ﷺ why he had turned grey, and he said that Hud, Al-Waqi'ah, Al-Mursalat, "'Amma yatasa'alun" (An-Naba) and "Idha ash-shamsu kuwwirat" (At-Takwir) had made him grey.

Recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, where al-Tirmidhi called it gharib; several later scholars have authenticated it through supporting chains. We describe it as reported and well known, not as a Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim narration.
