Historical Context

A Meccan surah that describes the sky splitting and the earth being stretched and emptied, then speaks directly to the human being, who is laboring toward his Lord and will meet Him. It describes the two ways of receiving the record of deeds, swears by the stages of the evening, night and moon, and ends with a verse about those who do not prostrate when the Quran is recited.

Main Themes

A sky that obeys

Verses 1-5 say the sky splits and listens to its Lord, as it was bound to, and the earth is stretched and casts out what is in it and empties itself.

A journey to the Lord

Two records

Verses 7-15 say that one who is given his record in his right hand will have an easy reckoning and return to his people happily, while the one given it behind his back will cry out for destruction.

Stage after stage

Verses 16-19 swear by the twilight, the night and what it gathers, and the full moon that people will surely move from state to state.

Prostration

Verses 20-21 ask why they do not believe and do not prostrate when the Quran is recited to them.
