Historical Context

A surah of 36 verses that opens with a warning for those who cheat in trade. Scholars differ on whether it is Meccan or Medinan, and it is often noted as among the last revelations of Makkah or the first of Madinah. A reported occasion links it to the people of Madinah after the Hijrah, when the Prophet ﷺ arrived and found them among the worst in measure.

Main Themes

Fair dealing

Verses 1-6 condemn those who take their full measure from others but give less when they measure for others, and ask whether they do not think they will be resurrected on a momentous Day.

The two records

Verses 7-21 describe the record of the wicked in Sijjin and the record of the righteous in 'Illiyyun, with the clarification that these are inscribed records.

The rust on the heart

Verse 14 says their hearts are covered by what they used to earn, which commentators understand as the effect of sin on the heart.

Mockery of believers

Verses 29-36 describe the sinners laughing at believers, winking as they pass, and say that on that Day the believers will look on and laugh in turn.

Important Verses

83:1-3

Woe to those who give less

Woe to those who give less than due, who, when they take a measure from people, take in full, but if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.

83:14

The covering on the heart

No! Rather, the stain (ran) has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.

83:26

A race for what lasts

The verses on the nectar of the righteous end with, "And for this let the competitors compete," an invitation to compete for the Hereafter.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

The stain on the heart

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that when a servant commits a sin, a black spot is placed on his heart. If he gives it up, asks forgiveness and repents, his heart is polished. If he increases, it increases until it covers his heart, and that is the ran Allah mentions in the Quran.

Recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, which graded it hasan sahih.

A reported occasion of revelation (tafsir)

A narration says that when the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah its people were among the worst in weights and measures, and that after this surah was revealed they became among the best.

Reported in Sunan Ibn Majah and elsewhere. We label it as a reported occasion of revelation in the tafsir tradition, with chains that scholars grade differently, and not as an established hadith. It is one reason scholars debate whether the surah is Meccan or Medinan.
