Historical Context

A Meccan surah revealed to console believers who were being persecuted for their faith. It swears by the sky with its great constellations and recalls the story of the "companions of the trench" as a historical example of believers tortured for no reason except that they believed. Its central message is that Allah is witness over everything and that persecutors who do not repent will face Hellfire.

Main Themes

The companions of the trench

Verses 4-8 describe a fire-filled trench and those who sat by it, watching what they did to the believers. The only thing they resented was that the believers believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy.

Two outcomes

Verses 10-11 say that those who persecuted believers and did not repent will have the punishment of Hell, while believers who did righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, the great success.

Allah's names of power and mercy

Verses 12-16 describe Allah's seizure as severe, and name Him the Forgiving, the Loving (Al-Wadud), Owner of the Throne and Doer of what He intends.

Past tyrants

Verses 17-20 point to the armies of Pharaoh and Thamud as examples that those who deny have been seized before.

Important Verses

85:8

Their only complaint

The tormentors disliked the believers for nothing except that they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy.

85:11

The great success

Those who believed and did righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, that is the great success.

85:14

Al-Wadud

And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate (Al-Wadud).

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

The story of the boy, the king and the sorcerer

Suhayb (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ told of a king, a sorcerer and a young believer who was ultimately killed after he taught the king's people to say, "In the name of the Lord of the boy." The king had a trench dug and filled with fire for those who refused to renounce their belief. Scholars commonly connect this account with the "companions of the trench" in this surah.

Sahih Muslim. Note that the hadith tells the story but does not itself say that it is the explanation of the verses; that link is made by commentators.
