Why read it
It is among the most vivid short descriptions of the Day of Judgment in the Quran, and a strong reminder that every soul will know what it brought.
Key point
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked for what sin she was killed (81:8-9)
Historical Context
A Meccan surah that describes the end of the world through twelve events, six in the first group and six in the second, then states that every soul will know what it has brought. Its description of the girl buried alive refers to a practice among some Arabs before Islam. The second half defends the Quran as the speech of a noble messenger, not of a possessed man or a devil.
Main Themes
Twelve signs
The sun is wrapped up, the stars fall, the mountains are set in motion, pregnant camels are neglected, wild animals are gathered, the seas are set ablaze, souls are paired, the girl buried alive is asked, records are spread, the sky is stripped away, Hell is kindled and Paradise is brought near (81:1-13).
The buried girl
Verses 8-9 are a direct rebuke of the pre-Islamic practice of burying infant girls, and they present the victim being asked for what sin she was killed.
The Quran's source
Verses 15-25 swear by the stars and affirm that the Quran is the speech of a noble messenger (understood as Jibril) with power before the Lord of the Throne, and that the Prophet ﷺ is not insane and not withholding the unseen.
Choice and will
Verses 28-29 say that whoever wills may take a straight path, but that people do not will except what Allah wills.

The Quran is only a reminder to the worlds, for whoever wills among you to take a right course; and you do not will except that Allah wills.
Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
"As if he saw it with his own eyes"
Ibn Umar (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said whoever would like to see the Day of Judgment as if with his own eyes should read "Idha ash-shamsu kuwwirat," "Idha as-sama'un-fatarat" and "Idha as-sama'un-shaqqat."
Recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, which called it hasan gharib, and in Musnad Ahmad. Later scholars including al-Albani authenticated it. The Prophet's ﷺ description of these three surahs is a report, not a ruling.
Surahs that turned his hair grey
The report in Jami' at-Tirmidhi that names "Idha ash-shamsu kuwwirat" among the surahs that turned the Prophet's ﷺ hair grey.
Graded gharib by al-Tirmidhi and authenticated by several later scholars.
