Historical Context

Among the earliest surahs revealed in Makkah, addressing the Prophet ﷺ directly as "al-Muzzammil" (the enshrouded/wrapped one) — commonly understood as referring to him being wrapped in a cloak, whether from the intensity of early revelation experiences or simply at rest when the revelation came. Its opening instructs substantial voluntary night prayer, later eased in the final verse once the young Muslim community's circumstances — illness, travel, striving in Allah's way — made the original instruction genuinely difficult to sustain.

Main Themes

Night prayer as preparation

Verses 1-9 instruct rising for prayer through a significant portion of the night, framed explicitly as preparation: "Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word" (73:5) — readying the Prophet ﷺ for the weight of his coming mission.

Patience with opposition

Instructs enduring what opponents say with patience and "gracious avoidance," rather than direct confrontation at this early stage.

The easing of the night-prayer instruction

The final verse (73:20), reportedly revealed roughly a year after the rest of the surah, acknowledges the original instruction's difficulty and reduces it, instructing to pray "what is easy" instead.

Important Verses

73:1-4

The opening instruction

"O you who wraps himself [in clothing], arise [to pray] the night, except for a little — half of it, or subtract from it a little, or add to it, and recite the Quran with measured recitation."

73:20

The instruction eased

Acknowledges "your Lord knows that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night... so recite what is easy [for you] of the Quran" — a rare example of a Quranic instruction directly adjusted in light of real difficulty, with the underlying obligation of some night prayer retained.
