Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

The occasion for verse 1

Ibn Umar (RA) reported that he divorced his wife while she was menstruating. Umar (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ, who told him to take her back and then to hold her until she was clean, then to menstruate, then to be clean, and then, if he wished, to keep her or divorce her before intimacy. That is the iddah that Allah commanded for divorcing women.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
