Historical Context

A Medinan surah that begins by addressing the Prophet ﷺ about something he had made unlawful for himself, apparently to please his wives. It sets out the expiation of oaths, refers to a matter he confided to one of his wives, and then addresses the believers about protecting their families, repenting, and following examples of women of faith and women of disbelief.

Main Themes

Making the lawful unlawful

Verses 1-2 ask the Prophet ﷺ why he forbade what Allah made lawful for him, and say that Allah has prescribed the dissolution of oaths.

A confidence disclosed

Verses 3-5 describe a matter that the Prophet ﷺ confided to one of his wives, her disclosing it, and the warning to two of his wives to repent, with a reminder of the Prophet's ﷺ standing with Allah, Jibril and the believers.

Protect yourselves and your families

Verse 6 tells believers to protect themselves and their families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels who do not disobey.

Sincere repentance

Verse 8 calls on believers to repent to Allah with sincere repentance (tawbah nasuha), promising that Allah may remove their misdeeds and admit them to gardens.

Women as examples

Verses 10-12 give the wives of Nuh and Lut as examples of disbelief despite their closeness to prophets, and the wife of Pharaoh and Maryam as examples of faith.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

A reported occasion: the honey

Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to stay with Zaynab bint Jahsh and drink honey there, and that she and Hafsah agreed to say, when he came to them, that he smelled of maghafir (a gum with an unpleasant smell). He said that he had only drunk honey and would not do so again, and verse 1 was revealed.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Another account about Maria al-Qibtiyyah is reported with weaker chains, and many scholars prefer the honey report.

The two wives

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that he wanted to ask Umar (RA) who the two women were whom Allah addressed in the verse "If you two [wives] repent to Allah, [it is best], for your hearts have deviated." Umar said they were Aisha and Hafsah.

Sahih al-Bukhari.
