Paired with Al-A'la in the Prophet's ﷺ Eid and Friday prayer recitation (Sahih Muslim).
Key point
88:17 — "Then do they not look at the camels — how they are created?"
Historical Context
A Meccan surah that opens by asking whether the report of "the Overwhelming" — a name for the Day of Judgment — has reached the listener, then describes two contrasting groups of faces on that day. It then turns to four familiar features of the Arabian landscape — camels, the sky, mountains, and the earth — as signs worth reflecting on.
Main Themes
Two groups of faces
Some faces will be humbled, toiling, and weary, entering a blazing Fire (88:2-7); others will be joyful, content with their effort, in an elevated Garden with raised couches, set cups, and spread carpets (88:8-16).
Reflection on familiar creation
Verses 17-20 ask whether people look at camels and how they are created, the sky and how it is raised, the mountains and how they are set firm, and the earth and how it is spread out. Commentators note these were all familiar to the Arabs addressed, making the argument immediate rather than abstract.
A reminder, not a controller
Verses 21-22 tell the Prophet ﷺ to remind, since he is only a reminder and not a controller over them; their return, and their reckoning, belong to Allah (88:25-26).
Important Verses
88:1
The Overwhelming
"Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?" — the name al-Ghashiyah refers to the Day of Judgment, overwhelming everything.
88:17-20
Camels, sky, mountains, earth
A four-part invitation to reflect: "Then do they not look at the camels — how they are created? And at the sky — how it is raised? And at the mountains — how they are erected? And at the earth — how it is spread out?"
88:21-22
Only a reminder
"So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller" — defining the limits of the Prophet ﷺ's role.
