Meaning
The Night
Why read it
Its verses sit at the center of a well-known hadith about deeds and destiny (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
Key point
92:5-7 — "As for he who gives and fears Allah and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease."
Historical Context
An early Meccan surah built around two oaths — by the night when it covers and the day when it appears — and a third by the creation of male and female, leading to its central claim: "Indeed, your efforts are diverse" (92:4). It then describes two types of people and the course each is eased toward.
Main Themes
Two paths, two outcomes
The person who gives, is mindful of Allah, and believes in the best reward (al-husna) will be eased toward ease; the person who withholds, considers himself self-sufficient, and denies the best reward will be eased toward hardship (92:5-10).
Wealth cannot buy rescue
Verse 11 states that the withholder's wealth will not avail him when he falls — a reminder that what is hoarded does not follow a person past death.
Giving for Allah's sake alone
Verses 17-21 describe the most righteous as one who gives his wealth to purify himself, expecting nothing in return from anyone, "only seeking the countenance of his Lord, the Most High" — and promise that he will be satisfied.
Important Verses
92:4
Diverse efforts
"Indeed, your efforts are diverse" — the pivot between the oaths and the two contrasting descriptions that follow.
92:5-7
The giver eased toward ease
"As for he who gives and fears Allah and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease."
92:8-10
The withholder eased toward hardship
"But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty."
Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
Deeds and destiny
Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said none of them was without a place written for him in Paradise or in the Fire. A man asked if they should then rely on what was written and abandon deeds. The Prophet ﷺ replied that they should act, "for everyone is made ready for what he was created for," and then recited 92:5-10.
Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim.
A reported occasion of revelation (tafsir)
Many classical commentators connect 92:17-21 to Abu Bakr (RA) purchasing and freeing enslaved Muslims who were being tortured for their faith, such as Bilal.
This is a reported occasion of revelation in tafsir literature, with chains of varying strength — we label it as a tafsir tradition, not an authenticated hadith.
