Historical Context

Revealed in Makkah. Al-Qadr concerns Laylatul Qadr, the night on which the Quran's revelation to the Prophet ﷺ began — traditionally understood as occurring within the last ten nights of Ramadan, though the Quran itself does not name an exact date.

Main Themes

The night's extraordinary value

Verse 3 states it directly: "better than a thousand months" — roughly 83 years, longer than most human lifespans, compressed into worship on a single night.

Angels and the Spirit descending

Verse 4 describes angels and the Spirit (commonly understood as Jibril) descending "by permission of their Lord for every matter."

Peace until dawn

The closing verse describes the night as "peace" until the emergence of dawn — read by many commentators as freedom from harm for worshippers that night.

Important Verses

97:1

The revelation's beginning

"Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree" — tafsir generally understands this as the start of revelation, not the entire Quran descending complete on one night.

97:3

Better than a thousand months

The verse that gives the night its singular weight — worship on this one night is described as outweighing consistent worship across more than eight decades.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

Seeking it in the last ten nights

Aisha (RA) reported the Prophet ﷺ said: "Search for Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan."

Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim.

The exact night is not fixed with certainty

Scholars have long debated the precise date, with the 27th night of Ramadan the most commonly cited estimate in popular practice.

No single authenticated hadith fixes one specific date with certainty — some scholars hold the ambiguity is deliberate, to encourage sustained worship across all ten nights rather than effort concentrated on one.
