Meaning
The Dawn
Why read it
Its closing verses are among the most comforting in the Quran, and its middle section is a direct challenge to how we treat the vulnerable.
Key point
O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him] (89:27-28)
Historical Context
A Meccan surah that begins with oaths, recalls three destroyed powers (the people of 'Ad, Thamud and Pharaoh), then criticises two attitudes: the way a person reads honour and hardship as signs of Allah's favour or humiliation, and the neglect of the orphan and the poor. It ends with one of the most tender passages in the Quran, the invitation to the reassured soul.
Main Themes
The ten nights
Verse 2 swears by "ten nights," which many commentators, including Ibn Abbas as reported in tafsir works, understand as the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah. Others say the last ten of Ramadan or the first of Muharram.
Powers that perished
Verses 6-14 recall 'Ad of Iram with the lofty pillars, Thamud who carved the rocks of the valley, and Pharaoh of the stakes. All transgressed and Allah's scourge fell on them.
How people read their tests
Verses 15-16 describe the person who, when honoured, says that his Lord has honoured him, and when his provision is restricted says that his Lord has humiliated him. The surah answers, "No!"
The orphan, the poor and wealth
Verses 17-20 say the real failing is not honouring the orphan, not urging the feeding of the poor, devouring inheritance and loving wealth with immense love.
The reassured soul
Verses 27-30 call the nafs mutma'innah to return to its Lord well-pleased and pleasing, to enter among His servants and enter His Paradise.
Important Verses
89:15-17
Wealth is a test, not a verdict
Tests of ease and hardship are not proofs of Allah's favour or humiliation. The surah then names what is actually wrong: not honouring the orphan.
89:27-28
The reassured soul
O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him].
89:29-30
Enter among My servants
So enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise.
Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The ten days of Dhul-Hijjah
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said there are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days. The Companions asked about jihad, and he said even that, except for a man who goes out with his life and wealth and returns with nothing.
Sahih al-Bukhari. This hadith is about the value of these ten days. The identification of Surah Al-Fajr's "ten nights" with them is a tafsir interpretation, which is widely held but not unanimous.
