Meaning
The Fig
Why read it
The Prophet ﷺ recited it in the Isha prayer during a journey, with a voice a companion described as unmatched (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
Key point
95:4 — "We have certainly created man in the best of stature."
Historical Context
A short Meccan surah opening with four oaths — by the fig and the olive, Mount Sinai, and "this secure city" (Makkah) — before stating that humans were created in the best of stature, then reduced to the lowest of the low except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. It closes with a rhetorical question about Allah's justice.
Main Themes
The best of stature
Verse 4 states that humankind was created in the best form — commentators understand this as referring to physical form, intellect, and capacity for moral choice together.
The lowest of the low, and who is exempt
Verses 5-6 say that humans can be brought down to the lowest of the low — except those who believe and do righteous deeds, who will have a reward that is never cut off. Commentators differ on whether "lowest of the low" refers to old age or to Hell.
Divine justice
The closing verse asks, "Is not Allah the most just of judges?" — presenting accountability as a consequence of His justice rather than an arbitrary threat.
Important Verses
95:1-3
The four oaths
"By the fig and the olive, and [by] Mount Sinai, and [by] this secure city" — scholars differ on whether the fig and olive refer to the fruits themselves or to places connected with them; the surah's meaning does not depend on resolving this.
95:4-5
Created in the best form, then brought low
"We have certainly created man in the best of stature; then We reduced him to the lowest of the low."
95:6
The exception
"Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted."
