Popular claims to treat with caution

These are often repeated online, but they are weak, disputed, or we could not trace them to a reliable source. They are listed so you can recognise them, not as established virtue.

Reading it cures depression or sadness.

Many people find comfort in this surah, and its message is one of reassurance. It is not a medical treatment, and anyone struggling should also turn to family, community and a qualified professional.

How to read this page

We keep three things apart: what the Quran itself says, what is reported in hadith (with its collection and grading), and what is only popular practice. A virtue report describes a recommended deed and does not make it obligatory. For rulings or personal practice, ask a qualified scholar. Our approach is explained on the about page.
