Understanding Aqiqah in Islam
Aqiqah is the sacrifice of an animal to mark a child's birth, paired traditionally with shaving the newborn's head and giving the hair's weight in silver as charity. The practice is grounded in hadith — Samurah ibn Jundab reported the Prophet ﷺ saying "Every child is in pledge for his Aqiqah, which is to be slaughtered for him on his seventh day, his head is to be shaved, and he is to be named" (Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami at-Tirmidhi). It's commonly described as reviving a practice connected to Ibrahim (AS)'s tradition of sacrifice, formalized by the Prophet ﷺ as a specific birth rite distinct from Qurbani.
