Understanding Qurbani in Islam
Qurbani (Udhiyah) commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son — a trial the Quran describes Allah ultimately resolving by substituting a ram in the son's place (37:102-107), a defining story of submission in Islam. The Quran also instructs: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]" (108:2). Its legal status is one genuine point of difference between schools: the Hanafi school (the majority position in Pakistan) holds it wajib for those who meet the Nisab threshold, while the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools treat it as a strongly confirmed Sunnah rather than strictly obligatory.
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice.”
— Surah Al-Kawthar 108:2
