Zakat Calculation on Gold in Pakistan 2026
How to calculate Zakat on gold with the current nisab value in Pakistan.
Many families in Pakistan hold gold as jewellery and savings, so zakat on gold is one of the most common questions at Ramadan. This guide explains the weight threshold (nisab), the rate, the rulings on jewellery, and how to calculate it, without quoting a price that would be out of date by the time you read it.
Quick answer
Zakat is 2.5% of the value of your zakatable wealth, paid once you have held wealth above the nisab for one full lunar year. For gold, the nisab is 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) in the Hanafi school, and about 85 grams in the majority view of the other schools. Use today's market price to turn grams into rupees, and our zakat calculator does this for you.
The nisab of gold and silver
- Gold: 20 mithqal, which is 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) in the Hanafi school. Other schools use about 85 grams.
- Silver: 200 dirhams, which is 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) in the Hanafi school, and about 595 grams elsewhere.
- The value changes daily with the market price, so the rupee value of the nisab changes too. We do not print one here. Check the live price on the day you calculate.
The rate and the year
The Prophet ﷺ taught that when you possess twenty dinars and a year has passed, half a dinar is due, which is 2.5% (Sunan Abi Dawud, graded hasan by al-Albani). The year is a lunar (Hijri) year starting from the day you first held a nisab. Choose a fixed date each year, such as 1 Ramadan, and use the same date consistently.
Jewellery: a difference between schools
- Hanafi school (the common view in Pakistan): gold and silver jewellery is zakatable even if worn, based on a report of a woman with heavy gold bangles whom the Prophet ﷺ asked about their zakat (Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' at-Tirmidhi, which scholars grade differently).
- Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools: jewellery that is worn lawfully by a woman is generally not zakatable, though it is when held as savings or beyond normal use.
Follow your school or ask your scholar. If you are unsure, giving zakat is the safer course.
Which nisab should you use?
Gold nisab and silver nisab differ greatly in rupee value, because 612 grams of silver is worth far less than 87 grams of gold. Many scholars in Pakistan use the silver nisab for cash and mixed assets, since it is the lower threshold and brings more people into giving, while those with only gold may use the gold nisab. This is a matter of scholarly judgement, so check with your scholar or local institution.
How to calculate zakat on gold
- Weigh your gold (pure content, in grams). For 22-carat gold, scholars generally reckon by value of the actual gold you hold.
- Find today's price per gram or tola for the same purity.
- Multiply weight by price to get the value.
- Add your other zakatable assets: cash, savings, silver, business stock and money owed to you that you expect to be repaid.
- Subtract debts that are due immediately.
- If the total is above the nisab (see above), pay 2.5%.
As a simple illustration only, not a price: if your zakatable total came to Rs 1,000,000 with no deductible debts, zakat would be 1,000,000 × 0.025 = Rs 25,000.
What is not zakatable
- Your own house and a car you use.
- Household items and clothes.
- Gold and silver that you do not own, or debts you cannot expect to be repaid.
Who can receive zakat
The Quran lists eight categories (Quran 9:60), including the poor, the needy, those in debt and those in the cause of Allah. In the Hanafi school, zakat cannot be given to your parents, grandparents, children or spouse. It can go to other poor relatives, who have a double reward (Jami' at-Tirmidhi and Sunan al-Nasa'i, graded hasan). Give to people you know to be eligible, or to a trustworthy organisation.
Paying on time
Zakat is due once the year is complete, and delaying it without reason is a sin. Many people pay in Ramadan for the added reward, which is a good practice, but it is not required. If you were unaware of past zakat, calculate and pay it now, and ask your scholar how to deal with earlier years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the nisab of gold in tola?
In the Hanafi school it is 7.5 tola (87.48 grams). A tola is 11.664 grams.
What is the rate of zakat on gold?
2.5% of its value, once the nisab has been held for a lunar year.
Do I pay zakat on gold jewellery I wear?
In the Hanafi school, yes. In the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, worn jewellery is generally not zakatable. Follow your school or ask a scholar.
Is gold bought as an investment zakatable?
