Historical Context

A Medinan surah connected with the period shortly before the conquest of Makkah. It opens with a warning against taking enemies of Allah as allies, referring to a reported incident of a Companion secretly writing to the Quraysh, then sets out the example of Ibrahim, clarifies the way to treat peaceful non-Muslims, and gives instructions on women who emigrate and the terms of their pledge.

Main Themes

Alliances and loyalty

Verses 1-3 warn believers against making enemies of Allah and the believers into allies, and say that family ties will not benefit anyone on the Day of Judgment.

Ibrahim as an example

Verses 4-6 present Ibrahim and those with him as an example, who said to their people that they were free of them and what they worshipped, and who relied on Allah.

Justice toward peaceful non-Muslims

Verses 8-9 distinguish those who did not fight the Muslims or expel them, toward whom righteousness and justice are permitted, from those who fought and expelled them.

Women who emigrated

Verse 10 deals with believing women who came as emigrants and instructs that they be examined and not returned to the disbelievers.

The women's pledge

Verse 12 lists what the believing women pledged: not to associate anything with Allah, steal, commit zina, kill their children, bring a slander they invent, or disobey in what is right.

Important Verses

60:4

An excellent example in Ibrahim

There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah."

60:8

Kindness and justice

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

60:12

The pledge of the believing women

A pledge of faith, honesty and good conduct, which the Prophet ﷺ took from the women.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

The letter of Hatib

Ali (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ sent him with others and told them to go to a garden where they would find a woman carrying a letter. They found her and took the letter, which was from Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah to the Quraysh, informing them of the Prophet's ﷺ plan. Hatib explained that he had family in Makkah to protect, and the Prophet ﷺ accepted his excuse, noting that Hatib had been present at Badr. The first verses of the surah were revealed regarding this.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Asma' and her mother

Asma' bint Abi Bakr (RA) reported that her mother, who was a polytheist, came to her, and she asked the Prophet ﷺ whether she should keep ties with her. He said yes, keep ties with your mother.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Commentators connect it with verse 8.
