Historical Context

A Medinan surah that deals with the exile of the Jewish tribe Banu Nadir from Madinah, reported in sources around the year 4 AH, after they were found to have plotted against the Prophet ﷺ. The surah describes the exile, explains how the spoils (fay') are to be distributed, praises the Muhajirun and the Ansar, criticises the hypocrites who promised support to Banu Nadir, and closes with a passage on Allah's names.

Main Themes

The exile

Verses 2-5 describe how the Banu Nadir, who thought their fortresses would protect them, were expelled, and how some palm trees were cut down or left standing by Allah's permission.

Distribution of the spoils

Verses 6-8 explain that what Allah gave to His Messenger from them was not acquired by cavalry or camels, and set its categories: the Messenger, kin, orphans, the needy, travellers, and especially the poor emigrants.

The Ansar

Verse 9 praises those who had settled in Madinah before the emigrants, love those who migrated to them, find no need in their hearts for what was given, and give preference over themselves even though they are in privation.

A self-accounting

Verse 18 tells believers to fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow, and verse 19 warns against those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves.

The Names of Allah

Verses 22-24 describe Allah by a series of names and attributes, including Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim, Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam, Al-Khaliq, Al-Bari' and Al-Musawwir.

Important Verses

59:9

Preferring others

They give preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul, it is those who will be the successful.

59:18

Look to tomorrow

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow.

59:21

A mountain humbled

If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah, as an example for people to reflect.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions

We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.

The Ansari who hosted a guest

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ in need. The Prophet ﷺ's household had nothing, so an Ansari took him home, dimmed the lamp and had his own family sleep hungry so the guest could eat. The next morning the Prophet ﷺ told him that Allah approved of what he and his wife had done, and the verse was revealed.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The last three verses and seventy thousand angels

Ma'qil ibn Yasar (RA) reported that whoever says three times in the morning "A'udhu billahis-Sami'il-'Alim minash-shaytanir-rajim" and recites the last three verses of Surah Al-Hashr will have seventy thousand angels pray for him until evening.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi (2922), graded weak (da'if). We mention it because it is widely repeated, not as an established reward.
