Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The woman who complained
Aisha (RA) is reported to have said, "Blessed is He whose hearing encompasses all voices. The woman who was arguing came to the Prophet ﷺ and I was in a corner of the room, and I could not hear what she said, yet Allah revealed, 'Allah has heard the speech of the one who argues with you...'"
Reported in Sunan Ibn Majah and Musnad Ahmad, with al-Bukhari recording a version without full chain. Several scholars, including al-Albani, authenticated it. The woman is named in reports as Khawlah bint Tha'labah.
The greeting of the Jews
Aisha (RA) reported that some Jews greeted the Prophet ﷺ with "as-samu 'alaykum" (death upon you). She replied angrily, and he told her to say only "wa 'alaykum."
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Commentators connect it with verse 8, which criticises those who greet the Prophet ﷺ with words other than Allah's greeting.
