Meaning
The Hypocrites
Why read it
Paired with Al-Jumu'ah in the Prophet's ﷺ Friday prayer recitation (Sahih Muslim).
Key point
63:9 — "O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah."
Historical Context
A Medinan surah about the hypocrites (munafiqun) — people who professed Islam outwardly while rejecting it in their hearts, a phenomenon that only became a real feature of the community once Islam had political standing in Madinah. A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari from Zayd ibn Arqam (RA) links part of the surah to a statement by Abdullah ibn Ubayy, a leading figure in Madinah, during a military expedition.
Main Themes
Words that don't match hearts
The surah opens with hypocrites declaring "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah" — and Allah affirming that He knows the Prophet ﷺ is His Messenger while testifying that the hypocrites are liars, since their words contradict their inner state.
Impressive appearance, hollow substance
Verse 4 describes hypocrites whose appearance and speech impress, yet who are "like pieces of wood propped up" — outwardly solid, inwardly empty — and who suspect every cry is against them.
Wealth and children as distraction
The closing verses turn to believers: do not let wealth and children divert you from remembering Allah, and spend before death arrives and a person wishes for more time to give in charity.
Important Verses
63:4
Like propped-up wood
"And when you see them, their forms please you... [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up" — a vivid image of outward polish without inner substance.
63:8
The statement behind a reported incident
"They say, 'If we return to Madinah, the more honored will surely expel therefrom the more humble.'" — the statement attributed to Abdullah ibn Ubayy; the verse replies that all honor belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers.
63:9-11
Before death arrives
A warning not to be diverted by wealth and children, and a description of a person at death asking to be given more time so he could give charity and be among the righteous — followed by the statement that Allah will never delay a soul when its time comes.
Hadith & Popular Descriptions

Zayd ibn Arqam's report
Zayd ibn Arqam (RA) reported hearing Abdullah ibn Ubayy say that people should not spend on those with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and that, if they returned to Madinah, the "more honored" would expel the "more humble." Zayd told the Prophet ﷺ; Ibn Ubayy swore he had not said it; the surah was later revealed, confirming Zayd's report.
Sahih al-Bukhari.
