67:1-2 — "Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent."
Historical Context
A later Meccan surah, revealed while the Muslim community continued to face rejection in Makkah. Its structure — sovereignty, then signs in creation, then the fate of disbelievers — is typical of Meccan revelation focused on establishing core belief.
Main Themes
Allah's sovereignty over life and death
Opens by framing sovereignty as a test of conduct, not simply a fact to observe (67:1-2).
The heavens as evidence of design
A direct invitation to look repeatedly at the sky and find no flaw (67:3-4) — commonly cited as an early invitation to empirical observation.
Human dependence on Allah
A sequence of rhetorical questions (67:15-24) asking who could provide safety or sustenance besides Him.
Important Verses
67:1-2
Opening declaration
Sovereignty exists to test human conduct — "which of you is best in deed" — not merely to be observed.
67:3-4
The precision of creation
An invitation to look at the sky repeatedly and find no flaw.
67:15-24
Rhetorical questions on dependence
"Do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not cause the earth to swallow you...?" — an argument built through direct questions.
Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
Intercession for its reciter
Recorded by Al-Tirmidhi (graded hasan gharib), Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah: this surah intercedes for its regular reciter.
Considered comparatively well-attested among surah-virtue hadith — several scholars, including Al-Albani, have authenticated versions — though not found in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim directly.
Recitation before sleep
A narration in Al-Tirmidhi (graded hasan gharib) reports the Prophet ﷺ did not sleep until reciting Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk.
Basis for the widespread practice of nightly recitation — described as reported practice, not binding instruction.
