Historical Context

A short Meccan surah that opens with an oath by the sky and the "night comer," which the Quran itself explains as the piercing star. It says that every soul has a protector over it, then turns to the origin of human beings as an argument for their return, and ends by saying that the Quran is decisive speech.

Main Themes

The piercing star

Verses 1-3 swear by the sky and the "night comer" and ask what will make you know what the night comer is, answering that it is the piercing star.

A protector over every soul

Verse 4 says there is no soul without a protector (hafiz) over it. Commentators generally understand these as angels who guard and record.

Origin and return

Verses 5-8 ask the human being to consider what he was created from, a fluid ejected, and conclude that the One who began him is able to return him.

The Day when secrets are tested

Verses 9-10 say that on the Day when the secrets are put to trial, man will have no power and no helper.

Decisive speech

Verses 11-17 swear by the sky of returning rain and the earth that splits open, and say the Quran is a decisive statement, not amusement, and that the Prophet ﷺ should give the disbelievers time.

Important Verses

86:4
