Historical Context
A Meccan surah, among the early ones, that opens with the letter Nun and an oath by the pen. It answers the accusation that the Prophet ﷺ was mad by assuring him of an unending reward and affirming his great character. It then warns against obeying a series of base characters, tells the story of the owners of the garden, and ends with the instruction to be patient, unlike the companion of the fish.
Main Themes
The pen and the Prophet ﷺ
Verses 1-4 swear by the pen and what they write, say the Prophet ﷺ is not mad, and promise him an uninterrupted reward, for he is of a great moral character.
Characters not to obey
Verses 10-16 list a series of vices of a person not to be obeyed, including swearing excessively, slandering and withholding good, and say that when Our verses are recited to him he says they are legends of the former peoples.
The owners of the garden
Verses 17-33 tell of people who swore they would harvest their garden at dawn without saying "in sha' Allah," and found it destroyed, after which they repented and turned to Allah.
The Day of the shin
Verses 42-43 refer to the day when the shin is uncovered and people are called to prostrate, but the disbelievers cannot.
The companion of the fish
Verses 48-50 tell the Prophet ﷺ to be patient and not to be like the companion of the fish (Yunus), when he called out while distressed.

Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
"His character was the Quran"
Aisha (RA) was asked about the Prophet's ﷺ character and said, "His character was the Quran."
Sahih Muslim.
The uncovering of the shin
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that on the Day of Judgment our Lord will uncover His shin, and every believing man and woman will prostrate, while those who prostrated in the world for show will find their backs become a single plank.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Scholars differ on how to understand this wording about Allah. Many early scholars affirmed it as reported without asking how or comparing it to creation, and others understood the verse as referring to the severity of the Day. We present both views without choosing one.
