Historical Context

Revealed after a pause in revelation (fatrat al-wahy) following the earliest verses of Al-Alaq — a gap reported in hadith literature to have genuinely distressed the Prophet ﷺ, during which Quraysh opponents mocked him, suggesting his Lord had abandoned or grown displeased with him. Ad-Duha directly and personally refutes that claim.

Main Themes

Direct reassurance after silence

Opens with oaths by the morning brightness and the stillness of night, before stating plainly that Allah has neither forsaken nor detested him — answering the specific taunt circulating at the time.

A reminder of past provision

Verses 6-8 list concrete past instances of care — being found an orphan and given refuge, found astray and guided, found in need and made self-sufficient — as evidence for trusting continued care.

Instructions following from gratitude

Closes by instructing the Prophet ﷺ to not oppress the orphan, not repel the beggar, and speak of Allah's favor — turning personal reassurance into a call to treat others with the same care he received.

Important Verses

93:3

The direct refutation

"Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He detested [you]" — answering the specific claim being made against the Prophet ﷺ during the pause in revelation.

93:6-8

Past care as evidence

"Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge? And He found you lost and guided [you], and found you in need and made [you] self-sufficient" — grounding trust in Allah's future care in His documented past care.

93:11

Speak of the favor

"But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it]" — closing instruction to openly acknowledge blessings rather than stay silent about them.
