Meccan

Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The first public prostration
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) reported that the first surah in which a prostration was revealed was An-Najm. The Prophet ﷺ prostrated, and everyone present prostrated except one man, who took a handful of dust and prostrated on it. Ibn Mas'ud later saw that man killed as a disbeliever.
Sahih al-Bukhari.
The sight of Jibril
Ibn Mas'ud (RA) said that the Prophet ﷺ saw Jibril with six hundred wings. Aisha (RA) held that what the verses describe was the sight of Jibril in his true form, not of the Lord.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. This is a point on which Companions held different views, which commentators discuss.
